A decade ago, a subtle yet impactful voice emerged from the Eastern Cape, enchanting the souls of South Africa and beyond. Today, Asanda Lusaseni Mvana, recognized worldwide as Msaki, embodies the essence of merging passion, purpose, and resilience in a constantly evolving musical realm. As she commemorates her 10th anniversary in the industry, Msaki reflects with appreciation on a journey that has not only molded her career but has also ushered in a new era for South African music.
“It’s been 10 years! I want to say ‘Thank you.’ The support and love from all those who stood by me did not go unnoticed, even during the challenging times. I look back at that with gratitude. I don’t know what the future holds, but I want to close this chapter by saying Camagu to my supporters, my partners in the arts, my collaborators, my friends, and my incredible family,” expresses Msaki.
A Decade of Msaki’s Sonic Journey
Msaki’s journey commenced like numerous South African narratives—with a profound sense of community, culture, and intention. Her inaugural album, Zaneliza, showcased a sound that blurred genre lines, rich in both poetic expression and protest themes, paving the way for a career that would transform the landscape of South African music. Whether through heartfelt acoustic ballads or vibrant dance anthems like “Fetch Your Life” (a collaboration with Sun-El Musician), Msaki has become a symbol of introspection, healing, and optimism.
From her Grammy-winning collaboration with Black Coffee to her genre-pushing partnerships with Tresor, Kabza De Small, and orchestras worldwide, Msaki’s music embodies resilience and transformation. Her talent for seamlessly transitioning between folk, electronica, amapiano, and orchestral compositions has solidified her reputation as a dynamic presence in global music discussions.
Beyond the Music: A Visionary and Advocate
What distinguishes Msaki is not solely her musical contributions but her steadfast commitment to fostering others and creating environments where independent artists can flourish. Alongside her own career progression, Msaki established ALTBLK>>Continua, a purposeful developmental platform aimed at empowering independent musicians and cultural practitioners. This initiative supports artists through pre-production, rollout, and post-production phases while fiercely upholding ownership rights and promoting ethical practices.
ALTBLK>> also opens doors for artists to showcase their talents on prominent festival stages worldwide, from Sauti za Busara to Sakifo and 1Beat in New York. Through ALTBLK>>, Msaki has guided emerging artists, with a particular focus on uplifting female musicians and assembling a team of six, which comprises five Black women.
Msaki’s influence also reaches into the realm of social empowerment. Her Fetch Your Life Foundation, inspired by her acclaimed song, aims to uplift youth in marginalized communities through music, creativity, wellness, and outdoor learning. The foundation collaborates with significant organizations such as the Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka Foundation, Tomorrow Trust, and Bridges Academy, creating valuable opportunities for young individuals to discover their purpose and pursue their aspirations.
Her involvement with Bridges Academy, where she acts as a board member and mentor, highlights her dedication to education as she assists young artists in navigating industry pathways. Additionally, she plays an instrumental role at Flames Studios, where she has initiated a podcast and peer interview system, further nurturing a sense of community among artists.
A Legacy Rooted in Creativity and Community
Msaki’s influence in the industry transcends music and mentorship. As the newly appointed head of the Music and Development Activation Department for the City of Johannesburg, she is responsible for connecting entities, developing programs, and activating spaces to support the city’s creative sector. Her enthusiasm and vision for Johannesburg’s music landscape are contagious, making her an ideal candidate to spearhead cultural advancement.
Through her Misimu Life initiative, a space that intertwines creativity, wellness, and nature, Msaki continues to cultivate environments where artistic expression and holistic well-being can thrive. Every September, Misimu Life hosts its Spring Equinox Creativity Retreat, offering a refuge for creatives to rejuvenate and reconnect with their passions.
Gratitude and Reflection
As Msaki reflects on this milestone, her message is clear: gratitude is at the heart of her journey. This decade of Msaki’s career is not just a reflection of her success; it is a celebration of the communities she has built, the lives she has touched, and the future she continues to shape. As she steps into the next chapter, Msaki remains a trailblazer, mentor, and visionary, inspiring the next generation of South African artists and creatives.
“The transition I am feeling is about making more space to use my energy and vision to serve while I am young. I understand my calling as an artist, but it now comes with a responsibility to care holistically about my peers in the industry and the next generation. I am open to where this charge to serve takes me and how it will intertwine with my future expression. For now, there is so much work to do on the ground,” shares Msaki.
