A £7,200 bronze monument of Harry Kane, England’s all-time leading goalscorer, has been unveiled.
The bronze seats at the Peter May Sports Centre in Walthamstow, London, have sparked passionate controversy.
The artwork, which depicts Kane seated with a football on his lap, has received harsh criticism for its unusual style, with supporters calling it the “stuff of nightmares.”
The statue was commissioned in 2019 during Kane’s time at Tottenham Hotspur, but its inauguration was delayed due to local officials’ inability to identify an adequate display place.
The sports centre was chosen at the end of the day, alongside graffiti murals celebrating milestones from Kane’s illustrious career, which boasts 426 goals and counting.
The Bayern Munich star and England captain appeared unfazed by the backlash, smiling as he posed beside the statue, fresh from his stellar performance in England’s 5-0 Nations League victory over Ireland.
