This incident occurred shortly after the NBS released its report on crime experience and security perception.

The report revealed that Nigerians paid a staggering N2.23 trillion in ransom between May 2023 and April 2024, with a total of 51.89 million crime incidents reported in households nationwide.

The north-west region had the highest number of crime incidents, exceeding 14 million cases, while the south-east had the lowest with just over six million cases. Interestingly, rural areas recorded more crime incidents (26,526,069) compared to urban areas (25,360,963) according to the NBS report.
