EPL: What Abramovich told Drogba before buying new Chelsea striker – Mikel Obi

Former Super Eagles midfielder, John Mikel Obi, believes there needs to be healthy competition for the striker position in the current Chelsea team.

Mikel Obi, who played for Chelsea from 2006 to 2017, enjoyed a successful stint at the club, winning multiple trophies including two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, a Champions League, and a UEFA Europa League.

During his time at Chelsea, the club relied heavily on the services of Ivorian legend Didier Drogba up front. However, owner Roman Abramovich brought in competition for Drogba with the signings of Fernando Torres, Nicolas Anelka, and Andriy Shevchenko.

Mikel Obi has now disclosed the conversation between Abramovich and Drogba prior to the arrival of new strikers to challenge for his position.

Speaking on his Obi One Podcast, Mikel Obi said: “Roman Abramovich explained to Drogba “you are the man, but injuries might come, dip of form, what are we going to do then?”

“Nicolas should not be angry I’m saying this, it’s for the betterment of the team and club”

“Roman every year brings in another top striker, we had Anelka come in to help Drogba, Torres, Shevchenko.

“We need someone who knows how to put the ball in the back of the net.”
