Chelsea ready to pay Premier League to avoid points deduction

EPL: Chelsea face transfer ban, points deduction

Chelsea are currently in talks with the Premier League to reach a financial settlement for payments made during Roman Abramovich’s ownership of the club.

The club is looking to avoid a points deduction and prefers to make the payment instead.

Secret payments related to certain transfers under Abramovich’s ownership were discovered by the new owners during the 2022 takeover process, which they promptly reported to the Premier League.

Negotiations are expected to conclude by the end of March. Despite the potential for tough sanctions, Chelsea argue that any rule breaches occurred over a decade ago under different ownership.

The club is optimistic about reaching an agreement and previously settled a similar matter with UEFA for £8.6 million.

That came after the club “submitted incomplete financial information”.
