Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger has issued an apology for his actions towards referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea during his team’s Copa del Rey final loss to Barcelona.
Rudiger confronted the referee and even threw an ice cube at him after Jules Kounde’s winning goal in extra time sealed Real Madrid’s defeat. The incident resulted in him receiving a red card.
In his post-match statement, he admitted that there was no justification for his behavior.
Speaking after the game, he said there was no excuse for his behaviour.
“There’s no excuse for my behaviour last night. I’m very sorry for that, sorry to the referee,” Rudiger was quoted as saying by Fabrizio Romano.
“We player a very good game from the 2nd half on. After 111 minutes, I was not able to help my team anymore and before the final whistle I did a mistake.”
