Netflix Renews Mara Brock Akil’s ‘Forever’ for Season 2 After Strong Debut

Netflix has officially renewed Forever for a second season, following a strong reception from audiences and impressive viewership numbers.

Created by Girlfriends and Being Mary Jane showrunner Mara Brock Akil, Forever is a modern reimagining of Judy Blume’s groundbreaking 1975 novel of the same name.

The series, which debuted on May 8, follows two Black teenagers from Los Angeles in 2018 — Justin Edwards (played by Michael Cooper Jr.) and Keisha Clark (portrayed by Lovie Simone) — as they navigate the complexities of first love, identity, and self-discovery.

According to Netflix’s latest viewership data, Forever soared to #3 on the Netflix Global Top 10 list in its first four days, racking up 3.7 million views, a testament to its relatable storytelling and emotional depth.

While speaking on the renewal, Mara Brock Akil shared a heartfelt statement:

“This show was never just about first love — it was about being seen. About letting teenagers be soft, complicated, and real. And the world showed up for that. Season 2 is our love letter back to the people who said, ‘Yes, this is for me.’ We’re honored, we’re excited, and we’re ready to go even deeper. Thank you to Netflix — Season 2 coming soon!”

The coming-of-age series is backed by a powerhouse team of executive producers including Judy Blume, Regina King, Reina King, Susie Fitzgerald, Erika Harrison, Sara White, Shana C. Waterman, and Anthony Hemingway.
