Tragedy has rocked the online beauty world following the death of 23-year-old Mexican influencer Valeria Márquez, who was fatally shot while live-streaming on TikTok.
The incident happened on Tuesday at a beauty salon in Zapopan, Jalisco, where Valeria Márquez worked. Authorities are treating the case as a potential feminicidio—a gender-based killing of a woman.
Known for her engaging beauty and makeup content, Márquez was interacting with her followers during the livestream when she appeared to react to someone calling her name.
She was seen holding a stuffed animal and reportedly voiced discomfort about a previous visit from someone who had left her a costly gift while she was away.
Shortly after, she muted the livestream, and gunshots were heard off-camera.
The stream cut off suddenly when an unknown individual picked up her phone, with their face briefly visible on camera.
Authorities have not identified any suspects, and no arrests have been made so far.
Her violent death has sparked renewed anger over the persistent issue of violence against women in Mexico, where approximately 10 women are killed daily, according to human rights organizations.
Supporters and activists have flooded social media with tributes and calls for justice, using hashtags like #JusticiaParaValeria and #NiUnaMenos.
Jalisco prosecutors have urged the public to come forward with any information that could help identify and apprehend those responsible.
