Popular Amapiano star Nontobeko Thandeka Ngema, widely known as MaWhoo, is facing serious legal trouble after allegedly calling an events company “scammers” — a move that could result in a R1 million defamation lawsuit.
According to a report by Sunday World, MaWhoo allegedly sent a voice note to a member of Blue Screen Entertainment, accusing the company’s owner and staff of fraudulent behavior. The message was reportedly sent after her scheduled appearance at the Durban Music Festival on May 3, where international hip-hop star Rick Ross headlined.
A letter of demand dated May 16, signed by the company’s legal head Brian Steel, claims that MaWhoo was fully paid for her performance. Yet, she allegedly created and circulated a defamatory voice note — without providing any supporting evidence — labelling the company and its team as scammers.
“Your actions constitute a serious act of defamation under South African law,” the letter stated, citing both reputational harm and potential commercial loss.
Blue Screen Entertainment is demanding a formal retraction and apology from MaWhoo by close of business on Monday, May 19, to be issued either in writing or via a voice note. Failure to comply, the company warns, will result in legal proceedings against MaWhoo and her business entity, MaWhoo Entertainment.
“We will pursue all necessary steps to protect our reputation,” said a Blue Screen representative, who declined to offer further comment.
Despite multiple attempts to reach MaWhoo’s management, including her manager Noxolo Ngema, no response was received at the time of reporting.
The R1 million damages claim underscores the seriousness of the alleged defamation and its perceived impact on Blue Screen Entertainment’s credibility and industry relationships.
As of now, MaWhoo has not publicly addressed the allegations or issued a response.
