A military operation intended to protect civilians has taken a tragic turn in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, where a military aircraft mistakenly bombed local vigilantes, worsening the aftermath of a deadly bandit attack.
According to reports released on Monday by security analyst Bakatsine via X (formerly Twitter), the airstrike followed a brutal assault by armed bandits on Mani community over the weekend. The attack left more than 20 farmers dead and over 50 villagers kidnapped.
In his post, Bakatsine stated:
“Yesterday, bandits attacked Mani community of Maru LGA in Zamfara and killed over 20 farmers. More than 50 persons are still in captivity. A military aircraft that came for protection mistakenly fired on vigilantes.”
The vigilantes, who had mobilized to defend their community, were reportedly misidentified during the chaos of the security response.
As of now, neither the Zamfara State Government nor Nigerian security agencies have issued an official statement confirming the details of the incident or providing further clarification.
This tragic event highlights the complex and volatile security situation in Zamfara, where rural communities continue to suffer from frequent bandit attacks, mass kidnappings, and the ongoing struggle between informal local defense groups and formal military interventions.
Many citizens are now calling for a transparent investigation and improved coordination between community-based security efforts and federal forces to avoid such deadly mistakes in the future.
