“Life Should Be Lived Simply” – Peter Obi Urges Nigerian Youths to Shun Get-Rich-Quick Mentality

‘Women not as corrupt as men’ – Peter Obi

Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerian youths to reject the growing get-rich-quick mentality and instead embrace hard work, skill acquisition, and entrepreneurship as sustainable paths to success.

Obi made this passionate appeal on Friday during the maiden edition of the Amatutu Community Entrepreneurship and Empowerment Summit, held in Agulu, his hometown in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.

“Life Should Be Lived Simply” — Obi

Addressing participants at the summit, Obi highlighted the dangers of wealth acquired through illegitimate means and the societal consequences of misplaced priorities.

“In 1957, my father owned three Mercedes-Benz cars among other properties. Today, none of those properties exist. I do not believe in acquiring wealth all over the world that is not for your immediate need — what for?”

“If people understand life in a simple manner, the urge to get rich by all means will not exist, and life will be more meaningful to all,” he said.

He encouraged young Nigerians to channel their energy into entrepreneurial ventures, trade, and productive skills, stressing that these efforts would not only lead to personal growth but also contribute to national development.

Empowerment for 50 Women and Youths

The summit, organised by Ms. Aisha Edward-Maduagwu, Director of the Sickle Cell Orphanage and Underprivileged Home in Agulu, empowered 50 beneficiaries, including women and young people. Support included cash, equipment, and tools to help grow their small businesses.

Obi commended the initiative and pledged his continued support for programs aimed at empowering the underprivileged, widows, and budding entrepreneurs.

Key Dignitaries Commend Community Initiative

Other notable attendees also lent their voices in support of youth development and rural empowerment:

  • Prof. Chinyere Okunna, Special Guest Speaker, praised the organisers and encouraged them to continue promoting positive values and rural transformation.

  • Prof. Josephat Ogbuagu, Chairman of the occasion, underscored the importance of innovation and community collaboration in driving inclusive development.

  • Ms. Edward-Maduagwu described the summit as a “milestone in Agulu’s pursuit of inclusive growth,” adding that it represents the impact of visionary leadership and investment in human capital.
