Former Togolese international and ex-Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor has once again expressed his deep admiration for Nigerian football legend Nwankwo Kanu, describing him as his idol and “the god of football.”
In a recent interview with Brila FM, Adebayor reflected on his early days at Arsenal, where he wore the iconic number 25 jersey, previously donned by Kanu. The Togolese star, who played for the Gunners between 2006 and 2009, revealed that sharing a locker with Kanu was a career-defining moment for him.
“That was one of the biggest things in my career,” Adebayor said. “I beg you people, Kanu [Nwankwo] is my idol and my god of football. So please, no comparison needed here. Thank you for understanding.”
Adebayor, who also had successful stints with Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Tottenham Hotspur, made 87 appearances and scored 32 goals for the Togo national team before retiring from international football.
Despite his own impressive resume, he remains vocal about the influence Kanu had on his football journey.
Kanu Nwankwo, a revered figure in African and world football, enjoyed an illustrious career that included spells at Ajax, Inter Milan, and Arsenal.
He remains a symbol of inspiration to many across the continent, with accolades including an Olympic gold medal, a UEFA Champions League title, and two African Footballer of the Year awards.
Adebayor’s comments have further highlighted Kanu’s enduring legacy and the respect he commands among footballers, past and present.
