Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, will never become Nigeria’s president again.
Speaking during a Thanksgiving Service at St. James’ Anglican Church, Asokoro, Abuja, on Sunday, Wike made the assertion while reflecting on the just-concluded commissioning of federal projects by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to the former Rivers State governor, Obi’s political moment has come and gone, stating that his supporters are driven by emotion and largely unfamiliar with the former Anambra State governor’s record.
“They say Peter Obi will be President, President where? Out of emotion, most of you are just following someone you don’t know,” Wike said.
He questioned Obi’s democratic credentials, pointing to his alleged refusal to conduct local government elections throughout his tenure as governor.
“For eight years, Obi was a governor but he never conducted local government election. Now he is saying that democracy is not working but it worked in his time. Only Obi was governor and chairman of all the local governments in Anambra State at the same time. The time has passed, he won’t have the opportunity again,” Wike added.
This is not the first time the FCT Minister has dismissed Obi’s political prospects. Back in April, Wike revealed that he did not support the Labour Party candidate in the 2023 presidential election because he believed “he had no chance of winning.”
Wike, a key figure in Nigerian politics has remained vocal in his criticism of Obi’s presidential ambition and the Labour Party’s support base.
