Sule Lamido Backs ADC-Led Opposition Coalition to “Save Democracy” in Nigeria

Former Jigawa State governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has thrown his weight behind the emerging opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing a mission to rescue Nigeria’s democracy from what he described as growing authoritarianism under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Lamido made the announcement during an empowerment programme held at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) headquarters in Dutse, where he addressed party supporters and stakeholders.

According to the former PDP chieftain, his decision to align with the ADC-led coalition—spearheaded by former Senate President Senator David Mark—was driven by a desire to restore democratic values, national unity, and good governance.

“Our coming together under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by Senator David Mark is for the unity and progress of the country, not for selfish interest,” Lamido said.
“Any patriotic Nigerian who has Nigeria at heart must come together to give his contribution to unseat the present administration in order to save the country and Nigerians from the difficult situation.”

He went further to condemn the APC administration for what he described as the erosion of democratic norms, including the suppression of opposition voices and abuse of power.

“Our duty now is to advise and guide for the betterment of the country and the brighter future of Nigeria,” Lamido emphasized.

The event also featured remarks from Senator Mustapha Khabeeb, representing Jigawa South-West Senatorial District, who noted that over 3,000 constituents had benefited from the day’s empowerment programme—an effort to uplift communities in the face of ongoing economic hardship.

Lamido’s declaration signals a significant political shift and a renewed attempt to galvanize opposition forces in preparation for 2027. As Nigeria’s political climate continues to heat up, his endorsement of the ADC-led alliance could serve as a major boost for the growing coalition against the ruling party.
