American pop icon Connie Francis, best known for timeless hits like “Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool” and “Stupid Cupid,” has passed away at the age of 87. Her publicist, Rob Roberts, confirmed her death in a heartfelt Facebook post early Thursday.
Born Concetta Rosa Maria Franconero in Newark, New Jersey, Francis became a household name in the late 1950s and 1960s. She was hospitalized earlier this month due to severe pain and had recently undergone hip treatment, according to a post on her official Facebook page.
“It is with a heavy heart and extreme sadness that I inform you of the passing of my dear friend Connie Francis last night,” Roberts wrote, though the cause of death was not disclosed.
Francis rose to fame in 1958 with her breakout hit “Who’s Sorry Now?” and became one of the top-selling female artists of her generation. Known for her powerful voice, effortless vocal style, and multilingual recordings, she sold millions of records worldwide.
Despite her mainstream fame fading after the 1960s, Connie Francis continued to record and perform well into later decades.
Just a few weeks ago, she expressed regret at missing a planned July 4th performance due to her health.
In a tribute, The New York Times described her as “petite and pretty” with “a powerful set of lungs and a natural way with a wide variety of material.”
