President Bola Tinubu has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 82.
The announcement was made during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session held on Thursday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, dedicated to paying tribute to the late Nigerian leader.
In his remarks, President Tinubu described Buhari as a symbol of “discipline, moral fortitude, and unwavering patriotism.” He praised Buhari’s enduring legacy, stating that although he was not without flaws, he remained “a good, decent, and honourable man” whose leadership helped shape Nigeria’s democratic journey.
“He stood always ramrod, unmoved by the temptation of power, unseduced by applause, and unafraid of the loneliness that sometimes comes to those who do what is right rather than popular,” Tinubu said.
Reflecting on their political alliance that led to the historic 2015 presidential election victory, Tinubu commended Buhari for leading the nation with restraint and dignity, especially during a time of economic and security challenges.
The president said the renaming of the university serves as a symbolic tribute to Buhari’s contributions to the northeast region, which faced heightened insurgency during his tenure. Under Buhari’s leadership, the federal government intensified military operations, provided humanitarian support, and invested in rebuilding critical infrastructure in the region.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari was a former military ruler (1983–1985) and two-term civilian president (2015–2023). He was widely known for his anti-corruption drive and commitment to fiscal discipline in public service.
The FEC session concluded with prayers and a moment of silence in honour of the late statesman. The university will now officially be known as Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, as part of broader efforts to preserve his legacy in Nigerian history.
