In a bold stride toward global sporting recognition, Nigeria has officially declared its intention to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix—potentially becoming the first African nation to stage the prestigious event since South Africa last did so in 1993.
The announcement was made by the National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman, Shehu Dikko, who confirmed that Opus Racing Promotions has been appointed as Nigeria’s official representative for the high-stakes bid. The targeted host city is Abuja.
Demonstrating intent and commitment, Dikko revealed that formal invitations have already been extended to key stakeholders in the global F1 ecosystem, including Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, and renowned track designers Tilke Engineers & Architects, for exploratory visits and investment discussions.
“We are exploring all possibilities to bring Formula 1 to Nigeria as soon as practicable—not just as a sporting event, but as a catalytic driver of tourism, infrastructure development, youth engagement, economy and indeed soft power for Nigeria,” Dikko stated.
He emphasized that the proposed Nigerian Grand Prix would serve as a major economic and national branding tool, with the potential to attract billions of dollars in private-sector investment while promoting unity, job creation, and innovation.
The race would either take place on a purpose-built track or a converted street circuit, in line with modern F1 standards. While Nigeria leads an aggressive campaign, South Africa and Rwanda are also in talks to host future Grands Prix.
BL Practice Hub is backing the NSC’s bid and forms part of a broader national strategy to position Nigeria as a hub for international sporting events.
