Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush has sustained a knee ligament injury while on international duty, his club Eintracht Frankfurt confirmed on Wednesday.
Marmoush was forced off in the fourth minute of Egypt’s goalless World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou on Tuesday after picking up the knock in a tackle. Though he attempted to continue, he eventually had to limp off the pitch.
“Initial results on a scan performed in Egypt indicate a knee ligament issue. He will now return to Germany for further assessment and to begin rehabilitation,” Eintracht Frankfurt said in a statement.
The Egyptian Football Association had earlier described the injury as a “bruised knee ligament.”
Marmoush, 26, has been in fine form for Frankfurt, scoring double digits in goals across all competitions since joining the Bundesliga side from Wolfsburg in 2023. His absence is a major blow for both club and country, especially with crucial Bundesliga fixtures and Egypt’s World Cup qualifying campaign ahead.
