Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has claimed that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will only win the Premier League title because of the money the club has spent on transfers.
Speaking ahead of City’s trip to the Emirates this weekend, Guardiola suggested that Arsenal — like other big clubs — receive more lenient treatment regarding transfer expenditure compared to his side.
Arsenal splashed out £300 million on new players last summer, taking their total spending since 2021 to more than £900 million, slightly higher than City’s outlay in the same period.
“I want to say to my friend Mikel Arteta, if he wins the title, it will be just because he spent, not because he worked a lot or his players,” Guardiola told reporters.
He added:
“It’s like Liverpool. If Arne (Slot) wins again, it will be because he spent a lot of money. Right? Because it’s not just Man City that happened. It’s for all of them.”
