WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature that could allow users to connect with others without revealing their phone numbers — a significant privacy-focused update for the messaging app.
According to reports from WhatsApp’s beta testing programme, the company is developing a username system that would let users create unique handles, similar to what’s already available on Instagram, Telegram, and X (formerly Twitter).
This feature would enable people to chat or join groups using usernames instead of phone numbers, giving users greater control over their privacy — especially in large groups or business conversations where sharing contact details can feel intrusive.
Leaked screenshots show a new “Username” field appearing in user profiles, allowing people to pick custom names and hide their phone numbers if they wish.
While the change could make WhatsApp function more like a social platform, experts have raised concerns about potential issues like username squatting and impersonation. To address this, WhatsApp is expected to introduce verification tools and identity safeguards before the feature rolls out globally.
The username feature is still in its testing phase, but if implemented, it could completely transform how over two billion users connect on WhatsApp — shifting the platform’s identity from being number-based to name-driven communication.
