The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has publicly distanced itself from reports suggesting its involvement in any ongoing strike within Nigerian universities.

In a statement signed by its National President, Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, the union dismissed social media claims that it had joined the industrial action, emphasizing its commitment to academic stability and constructive dialogue.

“CONUA wishes to categorically clarify that it has not declared any strike action and is not part of any ongoing strike,” Dr. Sunmonu stated.

He reiterated the union’s resolve to maintain academic excellence and stability through peaceful engagement with the government and other education stakeholders, rather than resorting to disruptions.

Dr. Sunmonu explained that CONUA currently has no reason to embark on strike, recalling that the union had previously protested its exclusion from the 2009 Agreement Renegotiation Committee inaugurated in October 2024. The protest, he said, prompted a meeting with the Minister of Education on September 11, 2025, during which the minister assured that the Yayale Ahmed Renegotiation Committee would be expanded to include all academic unions.

According to him, the Ministry has since fulfilled that promise, and none of CONUA’s concerns with the government have escalated into disputes warranting industrial action.

Following nationwide congresses held between September 18 and 24, members unanimously agreed not to embark on strike, affirming that dialogue and engagement remain the best approach to addressing sectoral challenges.

Dr. Sunmonu urged CONUA members to continue performing their academic and administrative duties with dedication and called on Vice-Chancellors to safeguard the welfare and safety of members at their institutions.

He also encouraged students to remain focused on their studies, assuring them of CONUA’s unwavering commitment to quality education, national development, and peaceful industrial relations.
