Nigerian music industry sidelines veterans – Dj Neptune

Popular disc jockey and producer Imohiosen Patrick, professionally known as DJ Neptune, has voiced strong concerns over what he describes as the growing practice of sidelining veterans in the Nigerian music industry.

According to him, many creatives are pushed aside once they attain certain career milestones, a pattern he believes is rooted in deeper structural flaws within the industry.

Speaking in a recent interview with Hip TV, DJ Neptune contrasted the Nigerian system with Western music industries, noting that veteran acts abroad continue to thrive alongside emerging talents.

“In Nigeria, once you reach a certain level they push you aside like, ‘Oya go to that corner, we’re done with you.’ It’s a structural problem. Abroad, the OGs are still as relevant as the newbies. We need to address the structural issues,” he lamented.

Reflecting on his own longevity, the award-winning DJ explained that staying relevant requires constant reinvention.

“Although I don’t plan to do this all my life—when it’s time to take a bow, I will. But what I have done over the years is knowing when it’s time to re-invent. That’s life. Things are changing, so you need to move with the time,” he added.
