Insecurity: ‘I feel perfectly safe here in Nigeria’ – Former UK PM, Boris Johnson

Russia bans Boris Johnson from country over Ukraine war

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson says he feels completely safe in Nigeria — a stark contrast to the negative reports he had seen before his trip.

Speaking at the Imo State Economic Summit 2025 in Owerri on Thursday, Johnson revealed that he was warned about potential security issues before coming to Nigeria, but he chose to visit anyway.

He said:

“When I decided to come to Owerri, I read some things, and there were people saying, ‘There may be some security problems in Nigeria.’ And I said, ‘Well, I am going to go anyway.’
Let me ask you: do you feel safe here today in this conference? Yes, we all feel safe. And I feel perfectly safe. Thank you, Governor, for what you are doing.”

Boris Johnson also praised Governor Hope Uzodimma’s efforts to provide 24-hour electricity in Imo State as part of a broader economic transformation agenda.

He further highlighted the role of artificial intelligence, noting that AI will be critical in helping the state achieve its development goals, describing the technology as “the future.”
