Premier League champions Liverpool have confirmed that striker Alexander Isak has successfully undergone surgery after sustaining a fibula fracture.
The Swedish forward was injured during Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday night, moments after scoring the opening goal. Isak was caught by Spurs defender Micky van de Ven immediately after striking the ball, leaving him grounded in pain.
The 26-year-old received treatment on the pitch for his left leg but was unable to continue and was forced off.
In a statement released by the club, Liverpool confirmed that Isak underwent surgery on Monday and will be sidelined for several months, though no specific return date has been set.
“Alexander Isak today successfully underwent surgery on the injury he sustained on Saturday,” the statement read.
“The Liverpool striker was injured in a challenge in the process of scoring the opening goal against Tottenham Hotspur and had to be substituted.
“After diagnosis, an operation was completed today on an ankle injury that included a fibula fracture. Isak’s rehabilitation will now continue at the AXA Training Centre, with no timeframe yet placed on his return.”
The injury represents a major setback for the player , who has struggled with fitness issues since completing a blockbuster £130 million move from Newcastle United to Liverpool last summer.
