Liverpool missed an opportunity to strengthen their grip on a Premier League top-four place after being held to a 0-0 draw by a much-changed Leeds United side at Anfield.
Arne Slot’s men extended their unbeaten run to nine matches, but another below-par attacking display proved costly as Leeds defended resolutely to earn a valuable point and move seven points clear of the relegation zone.
The visitors came closest to snatching victory late on when Dominic Calvert-Lewin found the net, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.
The draw leaves Liverpool three points clear of Chelsea and Manchester United in the race for Champions League qualification.
Leeds manager Daniel Farke rotated his squad with one eye on Saturday’s clash against fierce rivals Manchester United, leaving in-form Calvert-Lewin on the bench as part of four changes.
Liverpool were without Mohamed Salah, who is away at the Africa Cup of Nations, and injured forward Alexander Isak. The absence of last season’s two leading Premier League scorers was evident, as the Reds struggled to create clear chances.
Their best opportunity came midway through the first half when Hugo Ekitike completely miscued a free header from Jeremie Frimpong’s driven cross with the goal gaping.
Leeds, now unbeaten in six matches, have pulled away from relegation danger despite facing the Premier League champions twice during that run.
In contrast to the thrilling 3-3 draw between the sides earlier this month, Daniel Farke’s well-organised defence successfully frustrated Liverpool throughout.
Calvert-Lewin, who has scored in six consecutive matches, was denied a memorable winner 10 minutes from time after poking past Alisson Becker, only for the offside flag to cut short his celebration.
