The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured third place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Egypt 4–2 on penalties in the playoff match on Saturday.
The encounter, played in Casablanca, was tightly contested, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances throughout regulation time. Nigeria raised the tempo in the second half and pushed forward in search of a winner, but Egypt’s defence remained resolute, forcing the match to be decided by a penalty shootout after 90 minutes ended goalless.
In the shootout, the Super Eagles showed greater composure, converting four of their penalties while Egypt missed two.
Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerged as the hero of the night, making two decisive saves, including a crucial stop against Egyptian talisman Mohamed Salah.
Ademola Lookman calmly converted the winning penalty to seal victory for Nigeria, earning the team the bronze medal and marking the country’s ninth third-place finish in AFCON history.
