The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University branch, has resumed its previously suspended total and indefinite strike, citing the Taraba State Government’s failure to implement agreements reached earlier this year.
In a statement issued Wednesday in Jalingo and signed by branch chairman, Dr. Joshua Garba Mbave, the union said the government had not taken “concrete and verifiable steps” to fulfil its obligations under an agreement reached on January 17, 2025.
Strike Resumed After Review
According to ASUU, the strike was initially suspended in good faith to allow the state government time to act on the agreed terms. However, the union said no meaningful progress was recorded during that window.
“The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University Branch, hereby informs the general public, students, parents, and all stakeholders that it has resumed its previously suspended total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike action,” the statement read.
The decision followed a congress meeting held on February 18, 2026, where members reviewed the situation and resolved to reactivate the industrial action.
Key Grievances
The union outlined several unresolved issues, including:
-
Absence of a functional pension scheme for university staff
-
Unpaid salary arrears
-
Accumulated Earned Academic Allowances (EAA)
-
Non-implementation of the 2025 ASUU–Federal Government agreement
Dr. Mbave stated that the continued delay in addressing these concerns has significantly affected staff welfare, morale, and the smooth operation of the institution.
“Last Resort”
ASUU described the renewed strike as a last resort, noting that sustained dialogue with the Taraba State Government had failed to produce tangible outcomes.
The development raises fresh concerns for students and parents, as academic activities at Taraba State University are expected to remain suspended until the dispute is resolved.
