Awoniyi Risks FA Action Over Goal Celebration Message Against Tottenham

Taiwo Awoniyi could face further disciplinary action after his goal celebration during Nottingham Forest’s 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The striker came off the bench to score Forest’s third goal, wrapping up an important victory as the team continues its push to avoid relegation.

During the celebration, Awoniyi removed his shirt, which earned him an automatic yellow card. But attention quickly shifted to what was underneath, a religious message that read “God is the greatest.”

That moment could now bring additional consequences from the Football Association.

Under the rules set by the International Football Association Board, players are not allowed to display political, religious, or personal messages on their clothing during matches.

The regulation is clear that players must not reveal undergarments carrying such messages, and any breach can lead to sanctions from competition organisers, national associations, or even FIFA.

While the yellow card covers the act of removing his shirt, the message itself is what could trigger further review.

For now, it remains to be seen whether the FA will take additional action, but the situation has already sparked debate about how strictly such rules should be enforced, especially when it comes to personal or religious expressions on the pitch.
