American rapper and music mogul Jay-Z has spoken about the emotional impact of the rape allegations made against him in a 2024 lawsuit, revealing he experienced “uncontrollable anger” during the ordeal.
In an interview with GQ, the artist, born Shawn Carter, said the accusations left him deeply hurt and shaken.
“It was hard. Really hard. I was heartbroken,” he said. “I’m glad we got right to that so we could just get that out the way. Like, I was really heartbroken by everything that occurred.”
Reflecting on the broader climate, he added: “We’re in a space now where it’s almost like consequence is not thought about enough. Because everything is so instant, you know what I’m saying?”
Jay-Z described the intensity of his reaction, noting that the situation affected him more than he had expected.
“That whole (lawsuit thing), that s**t took a lot out of me. I was angry. I haven’t been that angry in a long time, uncontrollable anger,” he stated. “You don’t put that on someone – that’s a thing that you better be super sure.”
He also emphasized that he lives by strict personal principles, which he said have always guided his actions.
“You had to be super sure before you put those kind of things on a person. Especially a person like me,” he said. “Even when we were doing the worst things, we had those kind of rules. There was a line: no women, no kids.”
While acknowledging the emotional toll, Jay-Z maintained confidence in the outcome of the case.
“I knew that we were going to walk through that because, first of all, it’s not true,” he commented. “And the truth, at the end of the day, still reigns supreme.”
The lawsuit, initially filed in October 2024 and refiled in December, accused Jay-Z and fellow music executive Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs of assaulting a minor following the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. Both men denied the allegations, and the case was dismissed in early 2025.
Jay-Z later pursued a defamation lawsuit against the accuser and her legal team, though that case was also dismissed months afterward.
