The Ghana national football team have reportedly fallen victim to a suspected robbery at their training camp in Viennaahead of their international friendly scheduled for March 27, 2026.
Ghana’s senior national team had opened camp on Sunday, with training sessions commencing the following day as preparations intensified for the upcoming fixture.
Following their third training session on Wednesday, March 25, two players reported that their Rolex watches, valued at $20,000, had been stolen. A day later, a member of the technical team also discovered that $2,250 in cash was missing.
Team officials quickly alerted local authorities, but attempts to review security footage were unsuccessful after hotel management disclosed that the cameras were not functioning at the time of the incident.
The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, confirmed that preliminary findings point to a lapse in surveillance at the hotel where the team was lodged. Authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the failure of the CCTV system.
“They are working to carry out the investigation. The initial report we have is that the CCTV was not functioning, and the police are checking when it stopped working and who was responsible for the hotel’s surveillance system at that time,” Adams said.
Despite the disruption, the Black Stars are expected to proceed with their scheduled match against Austria national football team at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion later in the day, with kick-off set for 17:00 GMT.
