Transportation Minister Said Alkali Resigns to Pursue Gombe Governorship Bid

Said Alkali has resigned as Nigeria’s Minister of Transportation to contest the 2027 governorship election in Gombe State.

The development was confirmed on Tuesday by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Umar Jibril, who said the decision aligns with a presidential directive requiring political appointees seeking elective office to step down by March 31.

According to the statement, Alkali expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve under President Bola Tinubu, highlighting progress made in the transportation sector during his tenure.

“The minister is resigning to contest for the governorship in the upcoming elections. In his letter, he expressed deep appreciation to the President for the opportunity to serve, citing significant progress made in the transportation sector during his tenure,” the statement noted.

It also confirmed that the president has accepted the resignation and commended Alkali for his service to the country.

Alkali’s exit reflects a broader political shift as potential candidates begin positioning ahead of the 2027 elections, following the directive for appointees to step aside and focus on their political ambitions.
