Global superstar Jennifer Lopez has opened up about the personal transformation she experienced following her 2024 separation from actor Ben Affleck, revealing that the end of their marriage pushed her to confront herself in ways she had never before.
Speaking on the SmartLess podcast with hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, the 56-year-old singer and actress admitted she underwent a period of deep reflection and self-discovery after years spent looking for love and fulfilment in relationships.
According to Lopez, the woman she is today is very different from who she was just a few years ago.
“The person I am today is so different than the person I was even two years ago, it’s crazy. And now I can really look at my life, appreciate it for what it is and what I’ve created for myself and be really happy,” she said.
Reflecting on her decades-long experiences with heartbreak, including relationships with Marc Anthony, Cris Judd, Alex Rodriguez, and others, Lopez said she eventually realised she needed to stop looking outward and begin examining herself.
The actress explained that her healing process required difficult honesty and a willingness to understand her own patterns.
“You need to figure yourself out,” she said, adding that she had to stop “looking for love in other things.”
“Everybody needs to do that at some point in your life. It’s part of being human,” Lopez added.
The singer admitted that there were moments when it felt as though her life had fallen apart, but she came to understand that her own choices and unresolved personal issues contributed to some of the experiences she faced.
“At times, it felt like my life blew up in my own face,” she said.
“It was because of the choices I made, but also because of the fact that I had things that needed to change about myself that I didn’t understand or recognize that was attracting certain things and attracting a certain type of experience into my life.”
Lopez revealed that the turning point came after her most recent divorce, when she decided to cancel her tour and dedicate time to understanding herself rather than blaming others.
“After my last divorce, I just sat there and I was like, ‘You need to f***ing figure yourself out. What is going on with you? Forget about everybody else. There’s nobody to blame here except yourself, in a certain way,’” she recalled.
She explained that the last few years have been a period of major personal growth, with the past two years especially focused on healing and rebuilding her relationship with herself.
“The past twenty years, it’s been one thing. The past five years have been a tumult, and then the last two years have been kind of the healing process from that tumult where I really got to know myself,” she said.
Lopez has been married four times, including her marriages to Ben Affleck, Marc Anthony, Cris Judd, and Ojani Noa. She was also previously engaged to former baseball star Alex Rodriguez.
Her latest reflections offer a rare glimpse into the emotional work behind her public image, revealing a woman embracing self-awareness, accountability, and personal growth as she enters a new chapter of her life.
