“I Would Literally Be Unemployed” — Ayra Starr Opens Up About Life Before Music Success

Ayra Starr Claps Back

Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has revealed that her life would have taken a completely different path if she had not found success in the music industry, joking that she would likely still be living at home and enjoying her mother’s meals.

Speaking in a recent chat with EE72, the 24-year-old singer reflected on her journey to fame, her personality, and the impact the spotlight has had on her personal life.

According to the Sability hitmaker, music gave her a career direction she believes she may not have found elsewhere.

“If I were not doing music, I would literally be unemployed. I do not even think I would be a content creator. That would be a lot of work. I would just be vibing in my mother’s house, eating my mother’s food,” she said.

Ayra also looked back on a defining moment early in her career when she discovered that Mavin Records founder Don Jazzy had already been paying attention to her music before officially signing her.

“I was so excited when I found out they were listening to my music. You know who it is,” she said.

The singer further admitted that fame has made her more conscious of how much she reveals about herself, noting that she has a tendency to overshare whenever she is in front of a camera.

“I really wish people knew less about me. Once the camera comes on, I cannot stop talking. And I feel like I over share,” she added.

Born Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, Ayra Starr rose to prominence after releasing her breakthrough hit *Bloody Samaritan* in 2021, a song that helped establish her as one of the leading voices in Nigeria’s new generation of Afrobeats stars.

She was signed to Mavin Records in 2020 after Don Jazzy discovered her talent through social media. The music executive later revealed that he was impressed by her originality and made efforts to contact her family after initially struggling to reach her directly.

Since joining the label, Ayra Starr has continued to build an impressive career, releasing projects including her debut EP *19 & Dangerous* and her 2024 album *The Year I Turned 21*.

With several international collaborations, award nominations, and performances on global stages, the singer has become one of Nigeria’s most successful young music exports.

Her latest comments offer fans a humorous but honest glimpse into the life she might have lived if music had not opened the doors that transformed her career.
