“I’m Not Ghanaian, I’m an Egba Woman” — Nana Otedola Clears Up Longstanding Nationality Assumptions

DJ Cuppy calls out mother, Nana Otedola for berating her fashion sense

Nana Otedola, wife of Nigerian billionaire businessman Femi Otedola, has addressed the long-standing assumptions surrounding her nationality, making it clear that she is Nigerian and not Ghanaian as many people have believed over the years.

Speaking in a video conversation with her daughter, Temi Otedola, which has circulated widely online, Nana explained that misconceptions about her identity have often been linked to her name and appearance.

She firmly stated that her heritage is rooted in Egba land, a Yoruba subgroup from Abeokuta in Ogun State.

“To clear the room for everybody, I’m an Egba woman, and that’s the part I’ll gladly claim as a Nigerian. I am not a Ghanaian; my roots are in Abeokuta,” she said.

Nana further explained that although she was born and raised in Northern Nigeria, her family lineage remains firmly connected to southwestern Nigeria.

“I was born in Kaduna and lived there for almost two decades,” she added.

According to her, spending a significant part of her early life in Kaduna may have contributed to the confusion surrounding her background, but it does not change her Nigerian identity or her ancestral roots.

Nana Otedola is a respected philanthropist and the mother of prominent Nigerian personalities, including DJ Cuppy, Temi Otedola, and businessman Tolani Otedola.

Her clarification has sparked conversations online, with many people expressing surprise at finally learning about her true heritage after years of assumptions.

The revelation also highlights how names, appearance, and upbringing can sometimes lead to misconceptions about a person’s cultural background, even when their roots tell a different story.
