Adobe Acquires AI Startup Topaz Labs to Strengthen Firefly and Creative Cloud

Adobe has announced plans to acquire AI-powered image and video enhancement company Topaz Labs as it continues expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities across its creative software ecosystem.

The company announced on Thursday that Topaz Labs will become part of its Creative business once the acquisition is completed.

Founded more than two decades ago, Topaz Labs has built a reputation for developing advanced tools that improve image quality and restore video footage.

The company received an Emmy Award last year for its production technology and has increasingly focused on AI-powered creative tools.

In recent years, Topaz Labs introduced proprietary AI models, including Astra, which specializes in AI video upscaling, and Wonder, an image enhancement and retouching model designed to improve photo quality.

The company has also developed technology that enables large AI video models to run efficiently on consumer-grade graphics cards, making advanced editing tools more accessible without requiring expensive hardware.

Adobe said it plans to integrate Topaz Labs’ AI technology into its Firefly generative AI platform and other Creative Cloud applications, including its image and video editing products.

Despite the acquisition, Adobe confirmed that Topaz Labs’ products will continue to be available as standalone services through the company’s website.

Speaking on the acquisition, Adobe Vice President of Product Marketing for Creative Cloud, Deepa Subramaniam, said Topaz’s technology will provide creators with powerful new editing capabilities.

According to her, professionals combining real-world footage with AI-generated content will be able to use Topaz’s tools for tasks such as sharpening image details, reducing visual noise, improving video quality, and restoring archival footage.

“Topaz Labs brings deep expertise in optimizing large, complex AI models to run directly on device, a capability that will allow Adobe to deliver faster, more responsive experiences for customers and make advanced AI more accessible and cost-effective for creatives,” she said.

She also noted that Topaz Labs has earned the trust of photographers, designers, filmmakers, video editors, and enterprise creative teams through its long-standing focus on professional-grade editing tools.

The acquisition comes as competition intensifies in the creative software market.

Adobe has been expanding AI features across nearly all of its applications while facing increasing competition from platforms such as Canva and Blackmagic Design, the company behind DaVinci Resolve.

In recent years, Adobe has invested heavily in generative AI through its Firefly platform, introducing AI-powered image generation, video editing, design assistance, and content creation tools across Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Illustrator, and other Creative Cloud applications.

By bringing Topaz Labs into its ecosystem, Adobe aims to reduce creators’ reliance on third-party software for advanced image enhancement and video restoration while strengthening its position as an all-in-one creative platform.

Adobe said the acquisition is expected to close during the second half of 2026, subject to the completion of customary regulatory approvals and closing conditions.
