“I Cried After Being Rejected” – Mercy Aigbe Recalls Painful Nollywood Setback

“I don tire” – Mercy Aigbe cries out over pressure of doing business in Nigeria

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Mercy Aigbe has reflected on one of the most heartbreaking moments of her early acting career, revealing that rejection and humiliation nearly discouraged her from pursuing her dreams.

Speaking in an interview with Sunday Sun, the award-winning actress said many people admire her success today without knowing the difficult experiences that shaped her journey in the Nigerian film industry.

Mercy described life’s challenges as experiences that ultimately build resilience and purpose.

“The scars that challenge us the most eventually become what shape us. Most times, the scars we try to hide become our strength, growth, and purpose.”

She added:

“People look at Mercy today, all dressed up, beautiful, and shining… but to God be the glory. It wasn’t easy at the beginning.”

Recalling the incident, Mercy said she was on the set of the movie Akuko Ija when actor Yomi Fash Lanso mentioned he was heading to another film location where she believed she had also been cast.

Curious, she called the producer, whom she considered a friend, only to discover that she had been removed from the project.

The conversation took an even more painful turn when the producer initially claimed not to know her.

“She said, ‘Hmm, the only Mercy that I know is Mercy Johnson. But what do you want?'”

According to Mercy, the producer later explained that if she wanted to continue receiving acting jobs from her, she would have to seek permission before accepting roles from other filmmakers.

“She explained, ‘If you want me to be calling you for my jobs, you have to be getting permission from me before you go on any set.'”

The actress said the demand came as a shock after years of working hard to build her career.

“This startled me. I had dedicated four years of my life to this craft, and now I had to ask someone for permission to do my job?”

Mercy admitted the experience left her devastated.

“I felt so bad, and I cried.”

However, rather than allowing the setback to define her, she chose to persevere.

“In life, your scars are going to come with disappointment; people will misunderstand you. I was discouraged and demoralised. But I found courage. That is one thing you need to be successful in the creative industry.”

She continued:

“There is a need to believe in yourself and believe in your journey, and I kept going because I believed in myself. I kept attending auditions and giving my best.”

Mercy revealed that years after the incident, the same producer reached out to offer her another acting role.

Rather than holding on to resentment, she accepted the offer, choosing forgiveness over bitterness.

Mercy Aigbe began her acting career in the early 2000s after graduating from the University of Lagos. Over the years, she has grown into one of Nollywood’s most celebrated actresses while also establishing herself as a successful filmmaker.

Her productions, including Ada Omo Daddy and Thin Line, have enjoyed impressive box-office performances in Nigeria, cementing her reputation as one of the industry’s leading producers.

Looking back, Mercy says the painful rejection that once brought her to tears became one of the defining moments that strengthened her determination and helped shape the successful career she enjoys today.
