Dr Okonjo-Iweala became the WTO Director-General after her appointment was confirmed on the 15th of February, 2021.

Today First of March 2021, she resumes work as the first black woman, first african, first Nigerian and also the first woman in history to be elected WTO Director-General.


One of the major issues she would be looking into is the slowness of how the COVID-19 Vaccines are distributed across major poor African countries with higher cases of COVID-19.

Recall about 3 weeks ago, she was on the Aljazeera news network along with other professional both in the medical field and various works of life to discuss the possibilities and ways to which this very poor African nation can have access to the Vaccine.

According to estimated calculation, it might take up to 2 years for these vaccines to fully reach all the major African countries affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
