Early Life

Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas (born October 23, 1980, 45 years old), in Glen Cove, Long Island, New York. She was raised by parents who were both involved in the music industry.

Her mother, Tina Douglas, was a dancer and a dance teacher, while her father, Ken-Kaide Thomas Douglas, was a former vocalist. Her mother gave her the name Ashanti in honor of the empire that controlled Ghana from 1670 to 1957.

Career

She developed an interest and began singing at a very young age, thanks to her musical parents. When Ashanti was 12 years old, her mother first heard her performing Mary J. Blige’s record and immediately recognized her musical aptitude.
