Early Life

Alexander Abolore Adegbola Akande aka 9ice (born 17 January 1980), into a polygamous home of five wives and nine children, in Ogbomosho, Oyo State in Western Nigeria.

He is a Nigerian musician, songwriter, and performer. He grew up in the Shomolu Bariga suburbs of Lagos.

As a child growing up, 9ice’s parents did not have it all, which led to different struggles. He initially did not have much of a good relationship with his father and terms what they had, like a cat and dog relationship, until after his father learned to tolerate him.

He dreamed of being a musician. His parents discovered his singing talent and decided to allow him to become a musician.

Education

He attended Abule Okuta Primary School and then C.M.S. Grammar School Bariga for his secondary education. After that, he stayed home for more than four years because he couldn’t get admission to study at the University.

Then, he explored other menial jobs and did many things like boxing, football, and writing. Later, 9ice got admission to study Law at the Lagos State University but dropped out to concentrate on his music career.

Career

In 1996, 9ice recorded his first demo, “Risi de Alagbaja”, but it was not until 2000 that he released his first official solo song, “Little Money”.

In 2008, 9ice released the single “Gongo Aso”. With the song gaining popularity, 9ice was asked to perform at the Nelson Mandela 90th Birthday Tribute concert in London in June 2008. He went on to win the Best Hip Hop Artist of the Year at the MTV Africa Music Awards.

“Gongo Aso” won him four other awards at the 2009 Hip Hop World Awards held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja: Album of the Year, Artiste of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Rap in Pop Album.

In 2020, 9ice released another album, Tip of the Iceberg: Episode 1.

He is the founder and C.E.O. of the record label Alapomeji Ancestral Record.

In January 2014, 9ice announced plans to run for political office in 2015 as a House of Representatives member representing the Ogbomoso North Constituency, Oyo State, in the National Assembly.

In July 2008, after 9ice was introduced to Toni Payne by a mutual friend, Ruggedman, the two got married. The marriage lasted for two years, with the musician announcing their separation after their first child Zion. It was rumored that the marriage crashed due to infidelity with 9ice’s song, “Once Bitten,” which claimed to be directed at his estranged wife’s perceived romance with Ruggedman.

However, after six years, 9ice apologized to Ruggedman and Payne. Although they seem to have gone past their differences, according to Ruggedman, his relationship can never be the same with 9ice again.
