Temilade Openiyi aka Tems, a Nigerian singer, explained why she wore a view-blocking gown to the 2023 Oscars.
The prestigious awards are held on Sunday at the Dolby Center in Los Angeles and are attended by Hollywood’s best, who shine in various fashions.
Tems wore a custom white flowing gown from the AW22 collection of Ukrainian label Lever Couture, Leleka Couture. The large hood on the dress was criticized for obstructing the view of event attendees.
In a pre-Oscars interview with Harper’s Bazzar, Tems revealed behind-the-scenes details about the contentious gown. She decided to go all out for her first appearance at the Oscars, according to her.
“Two years ago, I said no to this dress.
“But this is my first Oscar; I’m going to do it all.” I really want to make the most of today. The dress is also my way of honoring my work, the people around me, and the land. my country and honor everyone who encourages me. This dress says, “Yes, yes, I’m here!”
Talking about her recent achievements in the international music scene, Tems said it was just the beginning for her.
She mentioned that her collaborations with music giants like Beyonce and Rihanna are a sign that she’s on the right track.
“If the greatest women in the world love my work so much that they work with me, then that means something.” My work goes to many places and has a certain impact. “And that is crazy!” I really try to keep my feet on the ground, keep running, and do the things that are one hundred percent right for me. Grow, learn, grow. “This is just the beginning for me,” she said.
