Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Tems has been confirmed as one of the headline performers for the grand opening ceremony of the Obama Presidential Centre in Chicago, United States.
The Obama Foundation announced the star-studded lineup for the dedication ceremony scheduled for Thursday, June 18, marking the official opening of the centre established by former United States President Barack Obama
Tems will share the stage with a host of internationally acclaimed artistes, including John Legend, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, Bruce Springsteen, Common, Marc Anthony, Christina Aguilera, and U2 members Bono and The Edge.
According to the Obama Foundation, the livestreamed event will celebrate the ideals that defined Obama’s presidency and the belief that ordinary people have the power to create meaningful change in their communities.
The ceremony will be held at the centre’s John Lewis Plaza and broadcast worldwide via the foundation’s official platforms.
The opening ceremony will also kick off a three-day celebration running from June 19 to June 21, featuring community programmes, live performances, art exhibitions, cultural experiences, and family-friendly activities.
Most sections of the 19.3-acre campus will be open to the public free of charge, while access to the museum areas will require timed-entry tickets.
Tems’ selection for the prestigious event marks another major milestone in her rapidly growing international career.
Born Temilade Openiyi, the singer has continued to break barriers on the global music scene, becoming the first Nigerian artiste to win multiple Grammy Awards and collaborating with some of the world’s biggest names in music.
Her performance at the opening of the Obama Presidential Centre places her among an exclusive group of artists chosen to celebrate one of the most significant cultural and historical projects associated with Barack Obama’s post-presidential legacy.
The appearance further highlights the increasing global influence of Afrobeats and the continued rise of Nigerian musicians on some of the world’s biggest stages.
