“Why Would You Truly Love Me?” — Temilade Openiyi Opens Up on Marriage and Faith

Temilade Openiyi Opens Up on Marriage and Faith

Grammy award-winning singer Temilade Openiyi has shared her perspective on relationships and marriage, explaining why she prefers a God-fearing partner.

Speaking in an interview with media personality Angie Martinez, Tems reflected on the realities of marriage, noting that it is not always easy and requires a deeper sense of accountability.

“My partner has to be a God-fearing man. Because why would you truly love me if you don’t have anyone that you answer to? If you’re not accountable to anyone, how could you choose to love and keep loving me for the rest of our lives?” she said.

She emphasized that marriage goes beyond emotions, describing it as a commitment that should foster growth and resilience.

“If you’re the god of your life, why would you love me forever? You could just discard me anytime you want. But marriage makes you a better human being. It should. It shouldn’t be about only love, it’s about compatibility. It’s about whether a relationship makes you a better person, like it evolves you,” she added.

The singer also noted that marriage naturally comes with challenges, and those moments play a key role in shaping both individuals involved.

Tems, born in Lagos in 1995, rose to global fame after featuring on “Essence” by Wizkid, a hit that reached the top 10 of the US Billboard Hot 100 and earned international recognition.

She has since become one of Nigeria’s leading voices in contemporary music, winning multiple Grammy Awards and releasing her debut album Born in the Wild in 2024.

Her comments have sparked conversations among fans about love, faith, and the role of shared values in long-term relationships.
