The All Progressives Congress senator Aishatu Dahiru Binani’s victory in the governor’s race in Adamawa State has been overturned by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Festus Okoye, the national commissioner for voter education and information at INEC, announced the announcement in a statement on Sunday.
Midway through the tabulation of results, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Adamawa, Hudus Yunusa Ari, pronounced Binani the victor. Due to the Returning Officer’s absence, the declaration has given rise to numerous issues.
Okoye wrote, “The attention of the Commission has been drawn to a purported declaration of winner in the Adamawa Governorship election by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) even when the process has clearly not been concluded.
“The action of the REC is a usurpation of the power of the Returning Officer. It is null, void and of no effect.
