Nigerian chef Hilda Effiong Bassey began her culinary career in 2020 and has since created a profitable company called My Food by Hilda. She uses the opportunity to display her cooking abilities and engage with her audience.
She has broken the current Guinness World Record
She is on track to beat the Guinness World Record for the “longest cooking marathon by an individual” after clocking in at 87 hours and 50 minutes.
Suppose Guinness World Records confirm her. In that case, she will be displacing the current world record holder, Lata Tondon, an Indian chef who achieved the feat in 2019 with 87 hours and 45 minutes of record-breaking uninterrupted cooking.
Baci is no stranger to the pressures of competitive cooking competitions. She won the first edition of the “Jollof Faceoff” in 2021, defeating other contenders, including a Ghanaian adversary in the final, to gain the most excellent version of West Africa’s highly-fought spicy rice supper title.
She said her mother’s culinary techniques influenced her enthusiasm for cooking, and her dishes were all homemade.
Road To Breaking The Guinness World Record
Hilda Baci cooked for four days non-stop. She stood to cook; she was not permitted to sit while cooking.
She cannot take coffee, stimulants, or any energy drink to boost her energy and bodily strength while cooking artificially.
She can eat food, drink water or fruit juice, & take glucose. The cooking occurred at Amore Gardens, Lekki, Lagos State, Nigeria.
She cooks round the clock, no sleep (Morning, afternoon, evening, and night. So, for four nights, she won’t sleep). She has just 5 minutes rest per hour [meaning for every 1 hour, she is entitled to just 5 minutes rest or break, that’s an hour break every 12 hours].
Other sources claimed that She gets a 30-minute break every 6 hours, and she spends the 30mins in a medical van which is just close by, within which she can nap, use the restroom, and get a medical assessment or checkup by the medical team available on the spot.
Whatever she cooks is shared with the people at the venue for FREE. She is not selling the food.
She cooks different meals simultaneously. She is at liberty to cook any meal she likes. There are no restrictions as to what she can cook or not cook.
The World Record title concerns cooking within a time frame, not about what is cooked. As long as she is cooking, she is on track.
Every meal cooked and every plate served is recorded
She has cooked over 115 meals so far with almost 3,000 portions, if not more, by the time you read this.
She started the cooking on Thursday and is expected to complete the target time frame by Monday, 15th May 2023 evening.
The current holder of the title Hilda seeks to break is an Indian chef Lata Tandon, who set a Guinness World Record for cooking for 87 hours and 45 minutes non-stop in 2019.
To break the record, Hilda Baci is attempting to cook for 96 hours, using extra 9 hours to break the world record as the first human on earth to spend such an amount of time cooking a marathon.
She tagged the cooking project “Cook-a-thon”, a phrase coined from the word “marathon.”
She appears exhausted already, but the people around her cheer her on to boost her morale. And they are available with her as she cooks 247, even at night.
Most of the food items, ingredients, utensils, etc., she used for this project are provided by her sponsors. So, the money expended on this project is not 100% from Hilda or her Food brand.
Uber, one of her partners, even offered a 40% discounted ride to the venue for people who wished to join and cheer her up at the venue.
Guinness World Record reveals reason for not yet endorsing chef Hilda Baci’s cook-a-ton
After being questioned about not showing or discussing chef Hilda Baci’s cook-a-ton, the Guinness World Record explained.
The Guinness Book of World Records, often known as the Guinness Book of Human and Natural World Records, is a reference book that covers human and natural world records.
Hilda Buci, a celebrity Nigerian chef, broke the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking period on Monday morning.
The previous record holder was Indian Chef Lata Tondon, who cooked dishes for 87 hours, 45 minutes, and 00 seconds.
Hilda Baci had been cooking for 91 hours and was still cooking at the time of writing this report.
Baci’s initial goal was to break Lata Tondon’s 87-hour-and-45-minute record, which she accomplished at roughly 7.46 a.m. on Monday.
But she didn’t want to stop there, so she set out to break the Guinness World Record by cooking for more than 96 hours.
Nigerians continue to congregate around the famed cook as she goes about her business.
People screamed in her live broadcast to show how proud they are of her. It should be noted that her cooking hackathon has brought many Nigerians from all walks of life together for the past four days as they converge around her cooking station.
Chef Hilda Baci replies to Guinness as they are taking time before officially confirming the record

Guinness has previously tweeted:
“We’re aware of this amazing attempt, we need to review all the evidence first before officially confirming a record.”
Hilda is a reserved person who prefers to keep her personal life secret. Hilda is most renowned for her culinary abilities and contributions to Nigeria’s food industry.
