The Department of State Services (DSS) detained Godwin Emefiele, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), late Friday, just after President Bola Tinubu suspended him.
Many were not surprised by President Tinubu’s decision to remove Emefiele, as the controversial CBN governor had been extensively lambasted for allegedly mismanaging the nation’s monetary policy.
His suspension was announced in response to a “ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.”
Emefiele’s suspension is effective immediately, according to Willie Bassey, Director of Information at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
Following the suspension, the DSS moved quickly to arrest Emefiele, claiming he was being held for questioning.
TGM recalls that Emefiele was accused of allegedly assisting and abetting terrorist acts, and the DSS attempted but failed to arrest him before President Tinubu took office.
