After a poor start to the Women’somen World Cup, Super Falcons of Nigeria defeated Australia 3-2 Wednesday, prompting the world football organization to intervene. The result sent Nigeria to the top of Group B.
Randy Waldrum, the coach of the Atlanta Falcons, surprised everyone by benching Asisat Oshoala.
Emily Van Egmond put Australia ahead, but Uchenna Kanu equalized just before halftime. Nigeria increased their lead to 3-1 in the second half, thanks to goals from Osinachi Ohale and Asisat Oshoala.
Alanna Kennedy scored for Australia in stoppage time, but it was not enough to prevent Nigeria from winning.
It was a great victory and relief for Nigeria after the final whistle while Australia were devastated. Nigeria’s final group stage game is against Ireland and they will need to win the game to make it to the knockout rounds.
However, Fifa reacted to the win by posting: “What a performance. What a result”
