Super Eagles’ major objective, according to Taiwo Awoniyi, is to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire by sweeping the rest of the continent.
The 3-2 victory over the Sierra Leonean Leone Stars last month gave the three-time champions, who have already qualified for the 2023 AFCON finals, a spot in the tournament.
In 2013, in South Africa, the Super Eagles last had success on the continent.
In 1980, the West Africans won the championship for the first time, and they did it again in 1994.
The Super Eagles could win the trophy once more, according to Awoniyi.
Awoniyi insisted the Super Eagles could win the trophy again.
“I think everyone in the squad is happy; the first stage is to qualify for the AFCON which we did already, then the next stage now is just to try everything possible to win the AFCON, which is the target for the country,” Awoniyi told Channels Television.
“The last one was an experience, I was there and we are happy we are there again and of course, we want to go there and we want to win the trophy for sure.”
The Super Eagles were eliminated in the Round of 16 by Tunisia at the last edition of the competition hosted by Cameroon.
