The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal consists of five justices, but the appeals court has disregarded claims that one of them, Justice Boloukuoromo Moses Ugo, has resigned as false.
According to the latest developments, “a fake report” is circulating online, but Bukola Gaar, head of media and personal assistant to the President, Court of Appeal, told the publication otherwise.
Verified Twitter user and Peoples Democratic Party chieftain Umar Sani claimed that the justice resigned because of calls to “kneecap” democracy, and that siding with Tinubu will be the demise of Nigeria’s democracy. The tweet is presently trending on Twitter and other news sites.
Sani tweeted that the statement by the Justice, who said he was urged to suppress evidence and dismiss cases that could have an impact on the election, contains this resignation.
The official from the appeals court has indicated that the allegation is false and should be dismissed, but the Justice has not refuted or confirmed the statement attributed to him.
The complaints submitted by the Labour Party, the Peoples Democratic Party, and the Allied Peoples Movement challenging the results of the presidential election, which saw Presented Bola Tinubu emerge as the winner, are currently before a five-man panel of justices, one of which is Justice Ugo.
Stephen Jonah Adah, Misitura Bolaji-Yusuf, and Abba Bello Mohammed round up the panel.
Ugo is from the Bayelsa State, South-South Nigeria, specifically the Kolokuma/Qpokuma Local Government Area. He is the youngest judge on the Presidential Election Petition Court bench, at the age of 57.
On March 24, 2014, he was appointed to the Court of Appeal bench, making this year his ninth overall and 44th on the bench.
He spent eight years on the bench in the Bayelsa State High Court before being promoted to the Court of Appeal. Currently, he is working as an appeals court judge in Kano.
