Manchester United and Barcelona have been fined by UEFA for breaking their financial rules, the organisation has confirmed.
In response to worries about potential rule violations, the European governing body compiled a lengthy list of teams whose financial transactions between 2019 and 2022 will be scrutinised, with both United and Barcelona under scrutiny.
Now that all financial records have been provided, UEFA has examined the data, determined that the two clubs fell just short of the requirements, and has imposed small fines.
United received a €300,000 fine, which is three times as much as what the other two clubs in the same circumstances, Konyaspor and APOEL FC of Turkey and Cyprus, respectively, received for reporting “minor break-even deficits.”
Barcelona’s €500,000 fine is the result of failing to disclose “profits on disposal of intangible assets (other than player transfers) which are not a relevant income under the regulations.”
After being given financial targets by UEFA, nine further teams were watched during the 2022–23 season. French team Lille met the requirements and was consequently taken off the watch list.
All of the following teams—AC Milan, Monaco, Roma, Besiktas, Inter, Marseille, and PSG—met their goals for the 2022 fiscal year, but they will continue to be monitored to assure compliance in 2023.
Turkey’s Istanbul Basaksehir was fined €400,000 for falling short of its goals.
