Erik ten Hag, manager of Manchester United, has expressed his satisfaction with defender Harry Maguire’s decision to reject an offer from West Ham, stating that the player remains an important member of the club.
The 20-time English champions accepted a £30 million approach from the Hammers for the England international, only for the 30-year-old to turn down the transfer owing to personal differences.
Despite being stripped of his captaincy following a campaign marked by limited Premier League outings, Maguire’s commitment to competing for a spot in the squad has not gone unnoticed by the 53-year-old.
The Dutch manager revealed his satisfaction, stating, “I am happy Harry Maguire is here. He is going to have to fight for his position as does everyone in the squad. He knows that I expect from him, what I expect from a centre-half. He can do it, he has the abilities to do it so now he has to show it.”
Maguire’s role in the team is likely to become even more competitive with the arrival of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, along with Victor Lindelof, who filled in for an injured Martinez during the recent victory over Wolves.
Ten Hag opened up on the importance of character and performance, he said. “It is about character, to be convinced to play that role, he has all the abilities to do it.” The manager acknowledged the need for depth due to the rigorous schedule ahead, with United set to partake in around 50 to 60 matches during the season.
